What is Citizenship?

According to lots of people Citizenship means a participatory member of a political community. Citizenship is gained by meeting the legal requirements of a national, state, or local government.

In some countries, citizenship can mean a citizen has the right to vote, the right to hold government offices, and the right to collect unemployment insurance payments, to name a few examples.

We have seen in this courses lots of point of view.

  • "Citizenship is the right to full partneship in the fortunes and in the future of the nation" Paul Martin
  • "There can be no daily democracy without daily citizenship" Ralph Nader
  • Every citizen of the republic ought to consider himself an unofficial policeman, and keep unsalaried watch and ward over the laws and their execution" Mark Twain

Living in a country does not mean that a person is necessarily a citizen of that country. Citizens of one country who live in a foreign country are known as "aliens". Their rights and duties are determined by political treaties and by the laws of the country in which they stay. For example here, I am French student in Spain for exchange, it doesn't mean that I am a Spanish's citizen.
